Zachary Pohl & Ariel Freilich

Zachary Pohl grew up in Datil, New Mexico, where sports—not dance—were at the center of his childhood. He excelled in track and field, becoming a state finalist in the 100-meter dash, long jump, and triple jump, while also earning All-State honors in basketball. His athletic background taught him discipline and a drive to pursue excellence, even while growing up in a very small town. In 2009, Zachary enrolled at New Mexico State University with an interest in business and entrepreneurship. A major turning point came when he met Ariel and, at her encouragement, auditioned for the university’s DanceSport team. He quickly discovered a new passion and began competing in all four ballroom styles. Today, Zachary brings his athleticism, competitive mindset, and entrepreneurial spirit to his professional career in American Smooth and Cabaret.

Ariel Freilich grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by physical activity and adventure. As a child, she divided her time between dancing, horseback riding, and sports, while developing a fascination with ballroom after watching the televised Ohio Star Ball each year. Traveling the world with her father also gave Ariel a love of exploration and new experiences. In 2008, she enrolled at New Mexico State University intending to study physics, but her plans changed when she joined the competitive DanceSport company. There, she discovered a deeper passion for ballroom and eventually pursued graduate studies, earning a master’s degree in Teaching Ballroom Dance. Ariel’s combination of athleticism, curiosity, and love of movement continues to shape her professional career. She now competes and teaches alongside Zachary in the American Smooth and Cabaret styles.

Ariel and Zachary met at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces through a mutual friend who knew they both loved dance. Ariel encouraged Zachary to audition for the university’s Contemporary and DanceSport teams, setting the stage for their partnership. They competed collegiately in all four styles—Smooth, Standard, Rhythm, and Latin—and became collegiate Smooth Champions at the Ohio Star Ball during their senior year. After graduating in 2015, they searched nationwide for their professional dance home and chose Fred Astaire Wisconsin, where they trained and taught under Stephen Knight and Hayk Arshakian. In 2016, Cabaret became a major focus alongside American Smooth. Today, they compete nationally and internationally in both divisions, combining athleticism, theatrical performance, and technical precision. Their ambition is to continue growing as performers and competitors at the highest levels.
